Preservation Architecture is a unique and highly-qualified small architectural firm where the principal is directly involved in all projects. Since 1990, the firm has served organizations and other design professionals engaged in the preservation of historic structures. Founded by Architect Marilyn Kaplan, a recognized expert on existing and historic buildings, the firm has worked on some of the nation’s most prominent historic structures and small and mid-sized historic buildings throughout New York’s Hudson Valley and the Northeast.
Services provided range from initial project planning efforts to construction oversight for municipal buildings, religious properties, museums and libraries, and cultural and community centers.
Project work includes interior and exterior restoration, interior upgrades for accessibility and functional improvements, and compatible new construction. Planning efforts include feasibility studies, existing building analyses, Historic Structure Reports, and rehabilitation code consulting.
The firm specializes in the application of codes (fire, building safety, energy) to existing and historic properties. Relevant professional affiliations have included the Association for Preservation Technology (Technical Code Committee); International Code Council; National Fire Protection Association (Committee on Cultural Resources); New York Department of State (Existing Building Technical Committee); the International Existing Building Code Sub-Committee; the Fire Safety Institute; and the Rutgers Center for Urban Policy Research.
Our Mission
The mission of Preservation Architecture is to collaborate with Owners and stewards of historic structures in order to identify appropriate and financially-feasible means to stabilize, rehabilitate and restore these properties for current and future use and enjoyment.
A successful project is possible only when the architect and design team are curious, open, and value the experiences of Owners and stewards most familiar with the needs and potential of each historic building.
